Gurukulam School of Fine Arts
in conjunction with SMKSSA

The music school has been from SMKSSA, Actonville, Benoni over the last few years after initially starting about 10 years ago in Bakerton, Springs.  The founders were Sri Sylvester Moodley & his elder Brother Sri Sivanandan Moodley. The Music school’s main focus is on promoting and propagating South Indian Carnatic Music, but the Guru and students are versatile in their repertoire.  Classes cater for students of all ages and classes are held on Monday evenings and Saturday mornings.

Sylvester chose the name “Gurukulam” after noticing the adverse effects that drugs, alcohol, peer pressure and bullying played in everyday lives of children.

Gurukulam, is an ancient tradition whereby the teacher takes the disciple under their wings and moulds and mentors the student, more like a parent would mould their child.   The school focuses of instilling the age old Indian traditions of respect, obedience, morals and values in both the child’s schooling life as well as their everyday lives.  Carnatic music is used as the base, as this form of music is very disciplined and consistent.

Students from this school have performed in many community projects and are award winning performers at competitions.

The schools main focus is not to create better musicians, but to rather create better human beings who will one day continue to spread these positive morals in their communities.
