About us

The SHREE MARIEAMMAN & KALIEAMMAN SIVA SUBRAMANYAM AALAYAM (SMKSSA) is a community temple, founded in 1936 in Boksburg and currently based at 175 Wynberg Street, Actonville, Benoni.

SMKSSA had humble beginnings in Boksburg in 1936 and started to attract a growing number of people. During 1964, due to the relocation of Indians to Benoni, the temple was moved to Benoni.

Current Status

It has been conducting Religious and cultural events that attract a large number of participants.  All significant Hindu prayers are observed at the Temple, Prayer service is observed every Sunday morning and music and vocal classes are held every week.  Recently, a Tamil school was started. The Temple has also been responsible for a Diwali festival and hamper distribution in Actonville. Additional youth initiatives include a Brigade marching band where SMKSSA youth play an anchor role, and youth from the broader community and surrounding areas are encouraged to participate.

SMKSSA’s vision is to be a cultural organisation that uplifts and improves the welfare of its community, with special focus on the youth and the needy.  We want to be relevant to the current times and our purpose is to make a difference to the community.  While the place of worship is a Temple, the organization provides services to all members of the community, irrespective of their religious affiliation.

SMKSSA has been responsible for hosting leading South African and Global Indian artists, bringing world class entertainment and cultural experiences to the local community.  The engaged and active youth provide entertaining and award winning cultural performances.

All this has been achieved in the confines of small residential premises.  The organization is working on a project to move to larger premises that will let us continue with our current activities and allow for growth to include additional services that the community requires and to cater for larger numbers.
